Glen Scotia Distillery

Founded in 1832, Glen Scotia is one of just three enduring distilleries in Campbeltown. There was a time when whisky virtually coursed through the streets of our town, with a distillery on every corner, and boats queuing in the harbour to carry off its casks. Through the years, all that knowledge, experience, craft, and whisky passion has been distilled into Glen Scotia, creating an exquisite example of the classic and distinctive Campbeltown single malt whisky style.

The Prevailing Spirit of Campbeltown

Glen Scotia prevailed against the odds where some thirty other local distilleries fell. Today it stands proudly among the last of the many, by virtue of the community spirit that defines Campbeltown. From humble beginnings, Glen Scotia has grown to become one the most celebrated and award-winning distilleries of Scotland of recent times.

In 2021 our 25 Year Old Single Malt Whisky was crowned best whisky in the world at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Just seven months later, we were named Scotland’s Distillery of the Year as the Scottish Whisky awards. It is the first time any distillery has won both awards, let alone in the same year. Meanwhile expressions such as our much-loved Victoriana and Single Cask releases continue to take home first place in their various categories.

That is why Glen Scotia is the prevailing spirit of Campbeltown.

Victorian whisky capital of the world

Founded in 1832 as Scotia, our distillery endured and prevailed through the decline of industry in the early part of the 20th century.

The ‘Glen’ was added to the name in 1939, and the distillery changed hands multiple times before it was bought by Loch Lomond Distillery Company in1996, later to become Loch Lomond Group. Glen Scotia’s most recent chapter has been nothing short of remarkable; following a series of investments it is at the forefront of driving the renaissance and resurgence of whisky in Campbeltown, putting its remarkable malts and style firmly back on the map for consumers around the world.

The Mull of Kintyre has one of the most spectacular stretches of Atlantic coast in the country, and
Campbeltown whiskies are characterised by subtly saline and maritime nuances, as well as a rich and deeply satisfying oily mouthfeel.

Rich in original features and equipment, the Glen Scotia Distillery in Campbeltown is an evocative and unique place to work and visit for whisky tours. We work hard to maintain the distillery’s historic buildings and whisky making process with care and pride.

To this day, we’re following our distillery founders' footsteps, distilling scotch using traditional methods to carefully create the unique Campbeltown whisky that we’ve become world-famous for — with maritime roots, a unity of cask finishings, and a harmony of flavours.

But we make more than single malt scotch at the Glen Scotia Distillery. You’ll also find two hives in the courtyard where our resident bees create their delicious honey.

A polestar for both distillers and enthusiasts, the home of our unique Campbeltown single malts has truly stood the test of time, and we love showing visitors around.

Glen Scotia produces two styles of whisky – peated and non peated. Our peated whisky is typically made over a period of 6 weeks per year.

Over the years the quality of our whisky has grown, with longer fermentation and vatting of the malted barley, as well as a slower and more careful distillation. But overall the process has remained the same. Although we no longer malt our own barley, we buy in Scottish malted barley to our exact specification in order to maintain the true Glen Scotia character through our distilling process.

Campbeltown's coveted single malts have become popular globally — an incredible achievement for a town that currently makes up the second smallest whisky region in Scotland.
